Event Details Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 9:00 AM –Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 5:00 PM (EDT)

The Goal
The goal of this hackathon is opening Africa to a connected world with tools and services, currently there are several tools and services available but individuals outside cannot utilize these services or connect to these services with tools available outside.
In no order of priority the following sectors are identified as areas which need the most innovation:
  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Education
  • Telecommunication
  • Banking
  • Health Care
  • Agriculture

The Challenge
As software engineers and problem solvers, we believe that every engineer possess amazing ideas and creativity. Hackathons are a longstanding tradition for solving problems in our industry where engineers stay up all night and weekend to create a working product from scratch (or a prototype for a future product). Remember- done is better than perfect.

Join fellow problem solvers as we work all weekend hacking, learning and having a little fun as well. Start brainstorming ideas & forming teams (of up to 4 people). We'll supply the fun diversions, prizes, and some expert guidance in the form of engineers. You connect your laptop, skills and ideas.

The winning team will get the chance to compete against teams from other Hackathons both domestically and internationally at the Summer Hackathon, held in New York City or Washington DC in July!

FAQ:

Q: What type of things should we build?
A: Africa is your oyster- think of something that annoyed you today. Harness that and build your next hack. Disrupting the current industry is highly encouraged, these are the best ideas!

Q: Does our project have to relate to Africa?
A: Yes. Your solution should solve a problem in Africa by improving lives.

Q: Do I have to be on a team? What if I don’t have one?
A: No, but more people on a team will typically mean that you can get more done in the limited amount of time you'll have. If you don't have a team on the day of, we can help you find one.

Q: Can I have a team of more than 4 people?
A: Only four people will be flown out to California for the Summer Hackathon, you can have more than four in your Hackathon team but you’ll only get four airplane tickets.

Q: What language or platform can I use?
A: Anything you want! As long as you are confident that you can come up with a working prototype by the end of the hackathon, you should be fine.

Q: Who owns the code after we're done?
A: You do! We will not own any of your code. Feel free to open source your code, expand on it, etc. This is a great opportunity to make use of advice from industry experts. We will provide a patent attorney at the Summer Hackathon to assist you with how you can further protect your intellectual property!

Q: Is it okay to work on a project we've created in the past?
A: Yes, feel free to use an existing project as starting point and create something new out of it. You can also come armed with pieces of code you might have done in the past and use it to get your project off the ground faster. Be sure to show one of our engineers the work you’ve already completed as we’ll judge you based on the progress you make during the event.
